Feeding the Children

Photos and information provided by Leslie Giese

Photo by Leslie Giese There are many community service aspects of parish life at Calvary Lutheran, and one is packaging meals for Kids Against Hunger. Several different sponsors provide financial support for the program, and Calvary Members provide the hands-on packaging services. As you can see, the assembly-line approach starts with a scoop of chicken flavoring, then includes freeze-dried vegetables, then a scoop of a soy ingredient, then a scoop of rice. A quality control team weighs each bag to make sure that the scoopers were accurate, and then someone seals the bags and stacks them for counting.

Each package contains six servings of fortified chicken casserole. That's six meals for hungry children both in the US and worldwide. On just one Sunday in December, we packaged over 100 bags, which will feed over 600 meals to the needy. Wayne Giese organizes the Sunday-afternoon packaging sessions as finances allow. More contributions lead to more sessions, which lead to more food for hungry children.
